A phobia is a persistent fear that will not go away. A person may recognize that it is irrational or is out of proportion to the situation however they still have difficulty controlling the fear and anxiety. Most times they will go to great lengths to avoid the feared situation.
Phobias can be about people, places, objects, animals and many other different things. Cognitive behavioral therapy helps people gradually expose to their fear. Through a structured week by week approach a person will learn the tools and interventions that will help them reduce their anxiety and help them cope.
