OBESSIVE COMPULSIVE DISORDER
OCD can affect children and adolescents. Exposure and Response Prevention therapy is a type of cognitive behavioral therapy that helps a child confront intrusive thoughts and reduce compulsions. Getting treatment early is key to reducing symptoms and helping children manage symptoms.
Children can have intrusive and obsessive thoughts about different fears. These thoughts may include hurting someone, hurting someone else, getting sick, not getting something right and other fears. In order to reduce the anxiety they feel about these thoughts they will perform compulsions such as seeking assurance, checking locks, repeating words, counting, hand washing and other compulsions. Exposure and response prevention is the recommended therapy for children, but there are circumstances when a child will benefit from medication. At Clarity OCD and Anxiety Center, we have have licensed therapists who are certified in Exposure and Response Prevention Therapy.
